About

History

Many of our food pantries started in parish garages, halls or simply tables laid out in the parking lot more than 30 years ago. The San Bernardino Diocese is a collection of 96 parishes located throughout the large geographic region of both San Bernardino and Riverside County.  More than 52 food pantries are supported today with parish donations, grant funders and community contributors. Free Food is available to all in the surrounding communities. Several food pantries run programs such as daily sack lunches, or weekly food boxes that feed a family of four or serve meals. On a monthly basis, we are now serving more than 10,400 children and families monthly with food.

Need

Food insecurity is defined as the lack of access, at times, to enough food for an active, healthy life. SUMMER is the hungriest time of the year for the 1 in 5 children who rely on school meals.

Effects of Food Insecurity on Children:

Lack of food and proper nutrition can lead to both health and cognitive issues in children such as nutritional or vitamin deficiencies causing fatigue, illness, anemia, stunted growth, bone deformities and abnormalities.

Children who are nutrient-deficient will also be moodier and face more challenges with emotional stability, anxiety and depression.

Food insecurity can also impact a child’s experience in school. Not having enough food leads to fatigue and higher absenteeism causing poor performance and lower grades.

    Food insecurity leads to parental stress and can affect the caregiving practices of the parents.

    Serving

    Single Moms with children, Children, Adults, At-risk Youth,Seniors, Veterans, Military Families, Homeless, Native American, Vulnerable and Marginalized populations. (no one is turned away or discriminated against).

    Community Impact

    More than 10,400 children and families are accessing one of the 52 food pantries monthly located close to them and are receiving food staples of dry and canned goods, fruits and vegetables, dairy, breads and proteins. Some parishes are able to offer sack lunches every day and others offer hot meals.
